Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world. The name means "the City which is a Temple." It was built during the 12th century by King Suryavarman II and dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, the Protector of Creation. A five-towered temple shaped like a lotus bud sits in the center of the complex. The outer walls represent the edge of the world and the moat is the cosmic ocean.

Bas-reliefs depict images of King Suryavarman II with hundreds of weapon-bearing warriors engaged in battles and other stories related to the king decorate the outer walls of the temple.

Towering over the complex, the Central Sanctuary can be a steep climb. It has four entrances each featuring images of Buddah.

The carvings of hundreds of apsaras or celestial dancing girls line the walls of the temple. These carvings are adorned with ornate jewlery and fancy headgear.
