Ho Chi Minh City is the larget city in Vietnam. It is the commercial capital and full of activity.
Originally, Ho Chi Minh city was a small fishing village known as Prey Nokor and ruled under the Khmer. At that time it was the chief port of Cambodia.
In 1859 the city was conquered by the French and named Saigon. The French influence can still be felt today.
The French were overthrown in 1954 and rather than join it's communist neighbors, Siagon was named the capital of the independent country of South Vietnam.
After the American/Vietnam war in 1975, the Vietnam People's Army took it over, and in 1976, it was renamed Ho Chi Minh City to honor the Vietnamese leader.
